How to get around SOPA blackouts

I don't like SOPA legislation like everyone else. However, there are a huge number of us that utilize Wikipedia all the time. I use it a lot for my game show, Pop Quiz. Luckily, there is a workaround...Google search your topic, find the Wikipedia entry, and look to the right and find Google's Cached pages. You can find a Cached page of most topics. So, during this political stance by Wikipedia, you can find the pages you are looking for on Google's Cached pages. Thanks internet for taking a stand and then providing a way for us to get what we want during that stand.

Is this the end of ugly cars?: The 2012 Detroit Auto Show

As a car nut for a couple decades, I may be ready to pronounce that we are at a period of time where there are no longer any ugly cars. This may sound like an exaggeration, but the amazing offerings from most major automakers look so good.

Kia, Hyundai, and Ford have done an incredible job with all of their new vehicles. Even cheap little cars like the Kia Rio, and Hyundai Accent look great. The 2012 Ford Fusion was released today, and the car is a beauty. Of all the new vehicles being released over the past few years, it is hard to find something ugly.

Toyota's Corolla, Camry, Yaris, and Matrix are foul. Their sales are proving it. Honda also has a bit of the uglies. The recent Accord is dull, and the Civic looks so similar to the last generation. Let's not talk about the Crosstour.

Even GM has really been stepping it up. The new Sonic looks better than the Aveo. The upcoming Malibu looks great, and all the Buicks are stylish.

The new BMW 3 series looks amazing as well. I'm not sure what it is with all these new great designs. Maybe auto manufacturers just care more about the design of the entire line-up then they used to. I have always thought that design was what really started changing people's minds about makes like Hyundai and Kia. Maybe designers have cracked some sort of design code. Every time I see a new Kia Optima drive by, I am amazed. It looks better than an Audi or Mercedes. Heck, even Subaru has a great looking sports car coming out this year, and most Subarus are ugly.

Some amazing things are happening in auto design...everywhere but Toyota. Maybe 2013 will be their year.

Sona Movsesian, leave Conan O'Brien

I could not stand by and watch this go on without saying something. After watching the documentary, Conan O'Brien Can't Stop, I have come to the conclusion that Conan is one of the worst bosses in a 3 mile radius of where he works. Therefore, I am offering Conan's assistant, Sona Movsesian, an escape. She can trade up, and be my assistant. I know she's had to endure endless torment from Mr. O'Brien, but she is too afraid to leave at at time when the job market is in the toilet. Just ask George Lopez's former assistant.

Sona, I am offering you a cornucopia of growth opportunities. So many people look for tangible rewards, only to miss out on the true lessons of leadership, entrepreneurship, innovation, and spiritual growth. The shallow ones among us are just looking forward to getting that new German car. I guarantee while you are employed by me, you will never own a German car, unless you already have a Jetta or something.

Red Letter Media: Conservative Republicans?

I have been a fan of Mike Stoklasa and Red Letter Media for a couple years. Red Letter Media is known for producing innovative movie reviews, as well as a separate review show called, "Half in the Bag". Stocklasa recently reviewed Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of The Crystal Skull. There were a couple critiques in this review that jumped out and caught my attention because of their political nature. Not only were the critiques political, but they seemed almost Conservative (gasp). As a Conservative Republican myself, I was happy to hear these criticisms, and surprised I didn't catch these issues when I saw the movie. Thank you Mike.

1. "The film makes no effort in any way to say that the US are the good guys, and the Russians are the bad guys."

The review spends almost 10 minutes explaining how Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull goes to great lengths to say that the US Government, along with our anti-communist paranoia is just as bad as the militaristic Russian Communists. The film shows the US Government threatening Indy by thinking he's a spy, and in turn he loses his position at his university. Mike Stoklasa points out that Indiana Jones was quite open about his dislike of Nazis in previous films, but the Communists? Eh? Stoklasa goes on to explain that because the filmmakers refused to clearly label who is good, and who is bad; the film suffers. It's not like Indiana Jones is some sort of deep political drama that speaks to the gray areas in all societies. It's a friggin adventure film where the good guys beat up the bad guys.

2. Mike Stoklasa Defends Capitalism

Within this critique, there is a point where Indy's friend betrays him for money, and the friend says, "I'm a capitalist." Stoklasa did an amazing job plucking this choice of words from the movie. The filmmakers are subtly trying to get the audience to think, "Wow, if a capitalist can be so rotten, maybe those Communists aren't so bad.". Stoklasa points out that tons of films are filled with greedy dirtbags, and it doesn't have a thing to do with the capitalist economic system. Sometimes people are just greedy dirtbags.

It amazes me that Stoklasa caught this and called bull crap. Most Republicans would catch this in the film and groan, but Red Letter Mike was able to connect it to the other anti-American plot points.

Now, I'm not really saying that Mike Stoklasa is a Republican. He'd hate it, plus in the field of awesome super geek movie reviews, being a Republican is bad business. However, Conservatives and Liberals see the world very differently. The "I'm a capitalist" comment, and the featuring of American paranoia would have gone over the heads of liberals. However, Mike Stoklasa made the connection that Lucas's anti-American propaganda was interfering with good filmmaking.

This is the question for everyone. Did Stoklasa critique these elements because he is a patriot, or because those elements just make for bad story structure? I think there is an element of both in Stoklasa's critique.

You see, I don't necessarily think that Red Letter Mike is a Red State Tea Party guy like myself, but he has some basic nationalistic instincts. He doesn't think the US is evil or play these moral equivalency games with communism. Stoklasa also has some basic understanding of history, and acknowledges that there were a number of Russian spies in the US during the Red Scare. Read Ann Coulter's book, Treason, and you will see how bad it was.

Anywhoo...Thanks to Mike Stoklasa for generating another great movie review for a film that really deserved to be torn to pieces. Part Two is not produced by the Pasadena Tea Party, but it was so well done, it could have been. Keep up the good work.

Pop Quiz: Episode 1

About a month ago I thought I'd like to create a little mobile game show for YouTube that would be inexpensive, fast, and easy to replicate anywhere. I spoke with Jonathan Wilson at Colony Bay, and he suggested we shoot a pilot in Pasadena the day before the Tournament of Roses Parade. Ultimately the shoot went quite well. Our contestants were responsive and fun. We also generated small crowds with each quiz. We did have some audio problems, and missed a few funny bits.

I'm not really sure how I'd like this show to look on YouTube. This video is over 8 minutes, but in many cases I think a highlight reel that is 5 minutes or less may be ideal. However, I think a longer introductory episode is fine. This episode has a mashup of various contestants, some of them just getting answers correct. We hope to shoot a more in the future. Possibly an episode every week or two. I we are in your town, we will tweet it.

I have known of Fred Davis's political ads, and his company Strategic Perception, for a few years. It looked to me like Saturday Night Live for politicians. I found the humor, absurdity, and frankness compelling.

I've had a love for comedy and politics since I was in high school I have generated a number of political videos on my YouTube page.

After finishing my MBA at Woodbury University in Burbank, CA just weeks ago; I thought about where I would really want to apply my talents. I figured I would really enjoy a job at Fred David's Strategic Perception. It appears that his staff is very small and dedicated. I thought I could make my way in as an intern. Therefore, I created the video below. I hope Fred Davis sees it, and contacts me. He lives in LA, I live in LA...I'm sure we can find time to do lunch. He's from Oklahoma, I'm from Texas...It could work. You can see the video below.

My idea for the video came from all the commercial music that has been popular for the past couple years. You have an acoustic guitar soundtrack and a whispery voice that takes you to a place where you want to spend all of your money. I like this type of music, but it is everywhere. I wrote this little song in that style. I think I first really noticed it with the Hershey's "I'll Melt With You" ad, and the Kingsford Charcoal, "Fascination" song. Therefore, I honor Fred Davis with my very own acoustic, whispery vocal intern ad. Look out, Ninjas!

It took me 6 hours to write the song, lyrics, shoot, and edit the video.

Prediction: The Party Politics Reality Show Cast

I would like to estimate who and what the future cast will be like. Here we go...

On the Right:

1. A gay white or hispanic male sort of conservative. This individual will only be fiscally conservative, probably voted for Obama last time. Has tattoos.

2. A far right African American male or female. Sort of a Herman Cain Jr.

3. A blonde female religious conservative Carrie Prejean type. She would be the type that can't defend herself that well, and they will try to transform her into a guilty liberal in the end.

4. A white male wacked out legalize drugs Ron Paul hipster moron. This person's answer to everything will be, "The Constitution!" and "end the war". Has tattoos.

The Left

1. East Cost Intellectual Socialist. Comes from money. Has tattoos.

2. Portland Communist. Is a tattoo.

3. Female Gay Activist. Has tattoos

4. African-American single mother. Has tattoos. Will pull out someone's weave.

Come on...look at that lineup. That would create some amazing drama. I would anticipate they would stack the "right" with quasi-conservatives, and the one true conservative would be an easy target. Think The View TV show, and how they all go after that one Republican woman who can't defend herself. See how I'm not in the mix. That's because I'm a true evangelical conservative that can thump liberals in a debate.

Apple Final Cut Pro X...Give it a kiss

I purchased Apple's Final Cut X from the App Store in August 2011. I have a i7 Quo Hackintosh with a Nvidia 285 video card. I love this program. Many professionals complained about Final Cut Pro X, but since I'm a Prosumer, Promature, Amapro...I love the way this program works with my video.

First of all, Final Cut Pro X works extremely fast on my Hackintosh. It works much like Adobe Premier's Mercury Playback Engine. Footage and Effects are rendered in real time. This program is also easier to use that iMovie. That may sound weird, but it is much easier to acquire the clips you need at the lengths you want. Anyway, it's a great program that has a number of impressive green screen keying and luminosity effects that you just can't find on iMovie.

I am using this program exclusively, and it screams with my current video card. I am very happy with it. I chose the Nvidia 285 video card to work with the Adobe Mercury Playback Engine, but I am using Final Cut Pro X all the time. I don't even need Adobe Premiere, and Final Cut Pro X is so much easier to use. It works so seamlessly with my iMovie, iTunes, and iPhoto.

I will say that Final Cut Pro X was pretty buggy in the first version. It would crash for no reason at random. I was only working on short one minute projects, so it wasn't a big deal, and there was an autosave. After the Final Cut Pro X update, I have had no crashes, and it seems that Apple has worked out most of the bugs.

Obama on The Tonight Show Review

I saw President Barack Obama on a special 10:00am taping of The Tonight Show. I was curious to see if I could get tickets, so I signed up on the Tonight Show website over the weekend on October 23 and received a confirmation October 25 around 5:00pm. There were two lines of people at the show; the guest list and regular tickets. I had a regular ticket.

I didn't see too much Obama flair. I saw two Obama shirts...one from 2008, and two guys with Obama 2012 buttons. It is my observation that the "regular" ticket group was significantly smaller than the guest list group. The guest list group was seated first. When I was seated, the gentleman to my left asked me if I arrived in the morning for walk-in tickets. I told him I requested tickets online. I asked him how he acquired his tickets, and he said the son of his friend sitting next to him worked for the show. As time went by and the show ended, it appeared that at least half of the people there worked for NBC or were friends of people that worked at NBC. Pretty easily you could tell it was stuffed with a bunch of NBC Obama fans. Jay told a rotten joke saying that Gaddafi had $200 billion dollars and didn't use it to help the poor people of his country...kind of sounds like a Republican. Ha Ha. He reacted as though he were kidding and said, you need to know your audience....meaning the room full of democrats. He also took 2-3 cheap shots at Rick Perry in the monologue. When Obama came out, this crazy lady in front of me was jumping up and down swinging her orange scarf in the air. She was like a true believer from 2008.

I was seated right in front of President Obama in the 7th row. I primarily saw the right side of his face since he was turned talking to Jay Leno. Obama was on for 3 segments. The first two were rather serious, and the third was light. They spoke about the death of Gaddafi and Awlaki, the Republican debates, troops leaving Iraq, his jobs bill, his approval ratings, and some other things. The most surprising question to me was when Leno asked Obama about his strategy in Libya of "leading from behind". To my knowledge that line was from Chris Christie. Obama said that someone had used that line, and it was picked up by the media. He said he didn't lead from behind, and that our troops did most of the air bombings, we put no boots on the ground, lost no lives, and it only cost $1 billion. I don't think it's true that we didn't put any boots on the ground. I think there must have been some sort of CIA or intelligence on the scene. There was at least that student from UCLA that was fighting with rebels in Libya for a while. I also would expect the real cost of the Libya intervention to be over $1 billion.

Obama didn't really comment of the Republican debates. He acted as if he had not watched them. He took credit for pulling troops out of Iraq, and still blasted Bush a little when he said that future presidents should look at Iraq as an example of how we could have done things different. When Leno asked him about his low approval ratings he said that he still had a lot of work to do, and there were 13 months until the next election to turn things around. Obama said that was a long time to turn things around. There was also some discussion of executive orders. He said if congress is gridlocked, then he was going to sign executive orders on the things that he could. Yep, that is a real balance of power for you.

All in all, this was a campaign stop. It seemed that the staff was a little bothered at having to put on a show at 10:00am, and that it was just unusual. Jay Leno said they were holding the show so early to accomodate the president's schedule. I should say so, usually the show is at 4:00pm. I didn't see a teleprompter. He seemed rather composed, didn't stutter, stammer, and go on forever. I think he will come off well, and the questions were rather softball. Jay didn't ask anything about Solyndra or Fast and Furious. I'm just glad I was there to take up a seat that could have otherwise gone to a democrat.

The 5 other videos were terribly boring, and not very creative. The problem with this video is that I come off as a complete lunatic. Also, I sort of didn't follow the rules.

The video above explains that I would like to offer former Detroit News automotive critic, Scott Burgess, the job of reviewing my 2004 Subaru Forester XT. I am entirely serious about this one-time gig. I'm offering him $1,000, two nights stay at a Holiday Inn Express, and two In-N-Out burgers.

I don't know Scott at all. I came across his name when he featured my Kelley Blue Book Video Contest review of my Forester on his blog. He had indicated it was one of his favorites in the competition.

The big news in the automotive world last week was Scott's resignation from the Detroit News. The paper was apparently pressured by an advertiser to have Scott tone down the online version of his Chrysler 200 review. In an act of journalistic integrity, Scott left the paper.

I'm sure he is fielding offers from all over the country at this moment. I wouldn't doubt if he is getting offers from national publications. At the moment, he is an automotive journalist rockstar. His long "Lebowski" hair aids in the rocker comparison. Still, if he finds the time, I've got a gig for him.

I would hope that Scott Burgess finds my little job offer entirely absurd, and takes me up on it. In fact, I need to be careful. If I call it a "job", the new healthcare law may require I provide his family with health insurance for 6 months.

My goal was to lure this rockstar to Los Angeles, bask in his glow, share some burgers, and talk car. It's good to see someone standing up for their principles. I won't cut my hair until I meet him.

This is a short entry I made for Malt-O-Meal's Bag the Box video contest. You can go all the way up to 2 minutes. I thought that shorter would be better. This is probably the closest I've come to producing a short video that is TV commercial cute. Lots of TV commercials have that "cute" humor that wraps up very neatly. That was my goal for this video. I'm pretty proud of it.

I had to do a lot of thinking of what other products benefit from better packaging, and had to add some humor in there. Enjoy.

Toyota Safety...We Keep F*%&ing Up

Below is a video I put together regarding Toyota's recent safety commercials. The reason I put this video together was to highlight the fact that Toyota is spending a ton of money telling the public that they care about our safety. Yet, months after the unintended acceleration nightmare, Toyota is still recalling thousands of vehicles for a number of reasons. I find it ironic they are running commercials saying that "everything has been fixed" when the current recalls show that everything is not "fixed".

I was not one of those to attack Toyota when the unintended acceleration issues were coming to light. I had a wait and see attitude. I am critical of Toyota at this time, because I think the safety videos are premature considering all the recalls, and the death of one of their famous test drivers, Hiromu Naruse, in the new Lexus LFA supercar. That doesn't sound very safe does it?

So, this video is a reminder that Toyota has a long way to go in restoring confidence in their products, and running a bunch of ads shouldn't erase our memories.

Kelley Blue Book Video Contest...I came in 3rd.

I came in 3rd for Kelley Blue Book's video review contest. I was one of the first to submit a video, and had a distinctively comedic take on the subject.

All of the winning videos were funny videos. I'm not saying that others ripped me off, but I think it gave them more confidence that a funny review would be accepted.

I was a bit surprised that so many funny videos won. There were some amazing videos with great cinematography and effects that looked right at home on Top Gear. Yes, those videos looked good, but not all that entertaining.

KBB.com indicated they had a hard time choosing the final order of the winners. I'm happy to have placed, and had a number of comments from people saying I should have won. That is nice to hear.

Apps not working on iPhone 4?

I downloaded a free application several weeks back that streams a local radio station I really like. When the apps were transferred to my new iPhone 4, the radio app no longer worked. I wrote the development company and asked them if they had a solution or an update. Here is what they wrote:

"Did you try transferring your apps from your previous iPhone? iTunes doesn't do a good job of moving it. Please follow the steps below to fix.

First, check that the app has been downloaded to iTunes, then:

1. Delete the radio app from your iPhone (or iPod Touch or iPad).
2. Power off your device (hold down the wake/sleep button until asked to "Slide to Power Off"), and then power it back on.
3. Reinstall the app to your device.
4. Start the app.

Let us know if you continue to have problems after following these steps.

The solution they provided worked, and the app started right up. They also provided further information...

"We're putting it on our website and FAQ pages, and notifying people as best as we can. We are not the only developers having this problem; some other apps have similar issues...and our reinstall steps would work with them too."

Laughtech Helps Flo with Progressive Insurance

Below is a video for a contest I entered for Progressive Insurance. If you win this contest, you get to be in a Progressive Insurance commercial with "Flo", the lady from the ads. I'm not really sure what they are looking for, but I had a few ideas right off the bat that I wanted to use in the video. You can see all the video entries at askflo.com. I've looked at a few entries, and it seems that most people were talking about saving money, and their quirky personalities.

I searched around on Progressive's website for a while and picked a few services that I thought should be highlighted that are not discussed as much in the commercials. I focused on their Instant Response Vehicles as well as their 24-hour customer support.

The lighting in the video is pretty bad. It is an ugly yellow. I was using a daylight balanced LED light, and very early in the shoot the battery ran out. Nice. I'm not too concerned about it, because the lighting in most of the entries I've seen is terrible as well.

If you want me to lose, wish me bad luck.

I took up the name Laughtech or Laughtech Industries a couple years ago. Most of the time, when I would search for Laughtech, friggin' Google would say, "did you mean lautech?". No, I didn't friggin mean lautech.

That made me feel so small and hopeless. The fact that Lautech was so much more popular saddened me. It meant that Laughtech was considered a mistake or a typo. Man, imagine being a typo. It was like being Jefg instead of Jeff.

Well, I am proud to announce, that if you type Laughtech into Google, you now get Laughtech. You don't get any friggin lautech. Do you know what this means? It means that lautech is now the typo. I have surpassed those friggin losers. Do you want to know what lautech is?

We Are Listening. Org Song Assessment

I entered a song contest and requested a critique from an contest and evaluation site called wearelistening.org. I wasn't really sure how reputable they were, but I sent them some money to enter their contest and receive an evaluation. I was mostly interested in the evaluation, because I've never had a "professional" review any songs I've done.

At the end of this post you will find my full evaluation from Kristin Cifelli. She is part of wearelistening.org's Artist Development team, but also a singer song writer out of Boston. If you are curious about what to expect from a wearelistening.org review, then you can read mine below.

Ultimately, I would have to say that I am pleased with the content and depth of the review. I believe that Kristin Cifelli provided me with several valuable insights. I appreciated her notes on lyric structure, mixing, vocal contrast, and vocal tune.

I received few notes on mix and layering of the instruments. There are a number of places where I opted not to include a bass line. There was no comments on that. There was no comment on aspects of harmony or instrument choices.

Particular attention was given to the lyrics, which, ironically, I happened to give the least attention. There were several lyrics Kristin liked, and several in which she thought I could elaborate on. I wonder if she focused on the lyric aspect of the song more than the others because she is herself a singer/songwriter. Listening to clips of her songs, I don't detect the musical layers that I have in my songs. On the other hand, just because she does not have them in her songs, does not mean she does not like the type of music I play.

In summary, I recommend the wearelistening.org song evaluation. The critique was fair and lengthy. You will most likely come across a number items in the evaluation you did not think think worthy of covering, and other aspects you think are missing. People are different, so are critics.

I plan on re-recording parts of my song, and possibly tinkering with the lyrics.

Song Title: Overcome

1. What is my strongest element, lyric, melody, or harmony?

I think the strongest element of the song is the melody. I like how the first verse begins in a lower register and then the "prechorus", ("Please, hear this little prayer/Please, my lungs need more air")is in a higher register and more flowing. I especially like the note you end "air" on. It's not your typical "do". :-) The chorus section, "And I'm Overcome/And I'm overrun", is still another contrasting melody. Great work on creating contrast between these three sections!

However, your second verse seems to have a different melody than your first verse. The second verse is in a higher register than your first verse, thus resulting in less contrast when you get to the prechorus again, as well as the chorus. While I like the melody that you have created in your second verse, try to remember to keep your verses consistent. This will ensure that the listener doesn't get lost, too.

Overall, good melodic contour, especially in the prechorus and the chorus!

2. What is my weakest element, lyric, melody, or harmony?

I think that the weakest element is the lyrics and more specifically the flow of phrases. I really like the chronology of your verses and the lyrics are well organized, but I think that they might be able to slip off of the tongue a bit smoother at times. For example, in your first verse, the line, "And you've never felt so low/As your head rests in your fingers" sings a little bit drawn out and a bit less than smooth. Perhaps if you adjust the melody and melodic rhythm a bit, the line would feel more natural. Try creating a melody that doesn't require you to hold out the word, "felt". It seems to lose some momentum right there.

In this verse, it might be more effective to describe the memory that is lingering. A little detail will draw the listener in and it will help us to experience what the writer is so overcome by.

Your second verse, SHOW us how the days are getting long. Are you not sleeping? Are you waking in the middle of the night? What do you see? Are your eyes glassed over from numbness? HOW are you coping with the pain? Are you ordering pizzas? drinking beers, whiskey, wine? Are you listening to music? Let us experience how you're coping instead of telling us simply that you're coping. I really like the third line, "And the taste of food is gone". I think you can go even further by describing something specific. Tell us that the coffee is bitter, or that you're forcing yourself to eat, or that everything is bland...etc.

I would also switch the two lines in your chorus so that the title is placed in the last line of your chorus. "And I’m overrun/And I’m overcome". This places your title in a very strong and memorable place!

Overall, the more sensory stimulating, the better. Don't tell us- SHOW us.

3. Is this demo commercially viable?

I think that this demo needs a little bit of work. Firstly, be sure that the vocals are up front in the mix. When pitching to commercial radio, etc., the first thing people are drawn to is the vocals. So be sure that they are tastefully in tune and in a great place in the mix so that we can hear the lyrics. Also be sure that the back up vocals are in tune, too! I really like some of the vocal octaves you were doing, but again, just be sure that they're in tune. Also consider taking some of the reverb off of the lead vocals. Having that much reverb on the lead vocal takes away from the real quality of your voice.

I really like the electric guitar sounds! They're very current and creative! Overall, work on getting a better mix of the recording, and making sure that all of the vocals are stellar.

I was in the store this evening, and a gentleman turned toward me and called, "Ryan". Well, I didn't pay attention to her, because I assumed that he was speaking to someone behind me. I could sense the was staring right at me, and he again called, "Ryan". I then made eye contact with him, and told him I wasn't Ryan. He said, "Sorry, Buddy".

I was thinking, wow, there is some guy out there who looks just like me. I also though, "Man, I hope he doesn't commit any crimes". What happens if he commits some horrible crime and gets away? All of a sudden, a photo of this guy that looks like me is all over the news. All of a sudden, people that know me will be trying to turn me in for the money.

On the other hand, what if I had not responded to the guy calling, "Ryan". The guy would have left the store thinking that "Ryan" was a friggin jerk.

I'm sure he'd call "Ryan" up, and say, "Dude, I saw, you at the grocery store last night, and you friggin' ignored me. Screw you, man. I volunteered to play on your softball team when you needed someone, even though I have a bad back. I hurt my back again at last weekend's game, because you told me to slide into 3rd base. I hurt my back for you, and can't say hello to me in the grocery store. You're a friggin' dick."

Yep, those are all the things that will happen when someone thinks you look like someone you are not, in a grocery store.

Movie Review: Woody Allen's Whatever Works

I have not seen a Woody Allen movie in a long time. The last movie of his I liked was Deconstructing Harry, from 1997. Each movie from then on was pretty bad. I hate to say this. I really liked Woody Allen's movies. Now keep in mind, statements like this have been made about Woody Allen's movies from the 60's, 70's, 80's, and 90's. I've always wanted to take this shot at him, so here it is: I just saw his recent film starring Larry David, Whatever Works. I liked Woody Allen, I like Larry David...

Whatever Works is Woody Allen's most aggressive cultural attack on southerners, Christians, conservatives, and NRA members. This is a lot of Annie Hall going on in this film. A young rural woman meets an older "intillectual". The idea is the same...a Woody Allenish character will go out with you, as long as you are attractive and adopt his beliefs.

In Whatever Works, Larry David brainwashes a Mississippi runaway, her mother enters into a relationship with two men, and her father ends up gay. The end of the movie show all the characters at a New Year's eve party, everyone was an ex of someone else.

One refreshing thing about this movie is that Larry David does not get affectionate with the young lady in this film. Woody Allen used to make out with young attractive actresses all the time in his old age. It was your grandpa's fantasy. It made the audience sick.

Woody Allen is very witty. I watch his movies expecting the politics to be left wing, but wanting to catch these flashes of brilliance. One of the best bits of his I have seen was in Everyone Says I Love You. A right wing son passes out and ends up in the hospital. While in the hospital, we discover he had a blockage in his brain, and the son has become a left winger. It was funny, only a blood blockage to the the brain could make you a dufus right winger. Woody Allen in a way is the left wing pothead son you never had. He had so much potential, but he wasted it on left wing intellectual self-indulgence. The unique thing about this movie, is that I had not seen such anti-conservative bias in a Woody Allen movie. It was Woody's conservative hatred on steroids.

I've got to tell you, it's hard being a conservative comedian in this world, because so many of the greats are left wingers. Ann Coulter had the most perceptive insight of any conservative comedian (yes, I called Ann Coulter a comedian, she is). She identified Larry David's humor as politically incorrect, and conservative. Only a conservative could have observed that fact. A major component to comedy is being counter to the establishment culture. Being counter to the establishment liberal culture makes you a CONSERVATIVE.

If you are a conservative, this movie will make you extremely angry. Unless you are very familiar with this type of film, I suggest you do not watch it. This film with not contribute to your life culturally. There will be no Jeopardy questions about this movie. It's a hunk of left wing garbage.

I am glad that I spent only one dollar to rent this film from a RedBox outside of Albersons. I hear that RedBox is hurting the profits of the movie studios. Good. Less money for Woody Allen.

Forget you Apple, I bought generic!

The battery on my Summer 2007 MacBook Pro has been shot for a while. My "laptop" was a laptop in name only. I could not power my computer away from a wall socket for more than 10 minutes. This is pretty standard in the computer world. Still, I was not about to pay $130 for a new Apple laptop battery.

I have always looked at OWC (Other World Computing) for memory and and other Apple needs. As of a few months ago, they did not sell a third-party MacBook Pro battery. They sold 85% capacity Apple batteries.

Several weeks ago I checked OWC and saw they had a third party laptop battery. It's called the NewerTechnology NuPower High Capacity MacBook Pro 15' Replacement Battery 63 watt-hour. That's a mouthful isn't it. The battery was $100 and a big "screw you" to Apple for their overpriced batteries. I really like Apple, but these prices are insane. I guess my laptop is old enough for another company to start making a generic version.

So, like all senior citizens, I'm buying generic drugs...er...batteries. As I type, I can feel the osteoporosis in its early stages.

Again, I trust OWC, and suggest you check out this battery replacement. You know, there is a terrible recession going on, so I suggest you save money, and pick up this replacement battery.

I was alerted the other morning that Eric Wareheim had Tweeted my video contest entry for the Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job Fan Promo Contest. The task was to create a 30 second promo for their upcoming season. I put together an idea that I thought would be at home in a Tim and Eric episode. I didn't really enter the contest for the prizes. The winner gets some DVDs, a t-shirt, and stuff like that. I entered because I wanted to have some great comedians see some of my work, and possibly get a kick out of it. So, that little Tweet by Eric Wareheim was pretty satisfying, and generated a sizable number of views for the video. So, mission accomplished! Thanks Eric, ole buddy, ole pal.

Grover Cleveland's Mustache featured on BuzzFeed

I noticed that my video for Grover Cleveland's Mustache was getting an increased number of views. I figured it was from the Eric Wareheim's tweet about my Old Man Beard video. Turns out that a website called BuzzFeed did a little piece called the 10 Best Songs for President's Day. The article was later picked up by the Huffington Post.

It's funny how the internet works, and how folks will do a search and pluck your content out of thin air. The Grover Cleveland's Mustache video wasn't particularly popular, and was stuck with only a few hundred views. The writer of the article most likely did a search for songs about presidents, and mine popped up. The only thing is, my song really isn't about Grover Cleveland at all. It's about his funny mustache. Anyway, nice to be mentioned, and share the love that is Grover's fine mustache.

Fat hispanic kid called me "Beotch" in Wendys

The inner city is full of street people, vagrants, perverts and gang members. This fact has forced businesses to keep their restroom doors locked and remove all mirrors. If not, street people would stay in the restrooms taking whores baths and drinking, gang members would carve their little logos or symbols in the mirrors, and perverts would meet each other and hose the place down with their semen.

While running some errands in the inner city, I stopped by a Wendy’s to pick up a snack, and use the restroom. Due to the Pentagon like restroom security protocols, I had to wait for a member of the Wendy’s team to come around and unlock the door. Soon after I had made my restroom request a female human stormed down the restroom corridor with her 3 or 4 kids. The oldest, an obese shaved head 9 year old was banging on the door of the empty restroom demanding to be let in. His sisters did the same thing to the female restroom door. I was waiting patiently for the employees unlock the door, and said to the meatwad brat, “Hey kid, I’m next.”

Here is what this little pud looked like:

The little neck-head proceeded to call me a liar. The gentleman standing next to me in line rolled his eyes at the commotion the kids were making, and said to me, “Yeah, you really look like you are a liar.” Soon the Wendy’s employee came out to unlock the door as the mini-meatloaf almost blocked the door. I said to the employee as she opened the door, “Excuse me, I’m next.” As I walked into the restroom and closed the door, the little sausage neck loudly called me a “liar” and twice a “beotch” with his sister smiling and mother looking on. I simply smiled at them and shut the door.

When I left the restroom, I did not see the burrito with legs or his family. It appears that this well-behaved family had just stopped by their local neighborhood Wendy’s to use el bano. They were not even customers. The gentleman in line who shared my outrage came by my table. I said to him, “Wow, what a nice family.” He said, “I’m sorry, on behalf of humanity.” We laughted. Soon after, the Future Criminals of America drove by in their mid-90s Toyota Previa minivan.

I would have loved to beat the hell out of a dirt bag 9-year-old extra large walking ham sandwich, but then they would have called the cops.

I can only hope that one day I’ll bump into this human fart, and he will have changed. I’ll see a handsome, well-groomed individual in a suit on his way to work. He will have just completed his MBA, and had landed a job as a VP in a prominent bank. He will recognize me on the street and say,

“I remember you. I was a complete asshole to you in a Wendy’s on Vermont Ave. when I was 9 years old. Please forgive me; I have changed so much since then. The best thing that ever happened to me was the death of my mother at the age of 22 from a heart attack. She didn’t teach me discipline, manners, or respect. I was lower than the shit of a cat in one of those houses that have 70 cats inside shitting everywhere. I was later adopted by a nice strict family in Thousand Oaks, and they are the reason I am a success today. I am a strong Christian Conservative, and I’m running for congress in my district as a Republican.”

Most likely the event listed above will never occur. What will probably occur is that he will crash into me several years from now going 80 mph while intoxicated. I will die, and my heart will be transplanted into his mother to save her life. He will then acquire some sort of scumbag attorney sue my family for his injuries, and have them pay for his mother’s surgery and a brand new Mercedes.

I just hope that this human cheeseburger “disrespects” the wrong guy (a Blood or a Crypt) and really gets what is coming to him.

I made a my first "mashup" several months ago which combined the Avatar movie trailer and the Thundercats theme song. I was not able to post this mashup on YouTube because of copyright issues...the song, the trailer etc. I'm not the type to use any copyrighted material, in fact I even go as far to write original music in most of my videos. The combination of these two pop culture icons was a must, damn the copyright. I posted the video on Vimeo and they had not taken it down.

For some reason, there was an uncanny match between the original Avatar trailer and the Thundercats song. It was a happy coincidence. I didn't expect the combination to take off and go viral, and it didn't. After logging in to the Vimeo website after several months, I found the Avatar mashup had been quite popular. In fact, the website avatarsucks.com actually featured the video. This accounted for tens of thousands of views. I found this to be pretty cool, especially from a video that I thought would not garner much attention. Again, in my opinion, it didn't quite go viral, but did pretty well.

It's nice to see a little mashup you made several months ago, go on to make a life of it's own. I mean, you gave birth to it, you raised it. You taught it wrong from right.

By the way, I saw Avatar and thought it was ok. I also thought it kinda sucked.

Apple iPad..an iDisappointment

The announcement of the Apple iPad brings with it the fact that it is an entertainment device rather than a productivity device.

With the iPad you can do all the things you do with your iPhone, but in a larger size and without a camera. Still, the iPad screen size being closer to laptop sized does not allow you to view web pages encoded with Flash.

With the iPad, your movies and photos will look better. You don’t have to go through the exhaustive steps of opening a laptop.

Steve Jobs said that the iPad is positioned to be between an iPhone and a laptop. Unfortunately, the device is much closer to an iPhone. If you own an iPad, you will still need a laptop to make up for its gaps in functionality. I hoped that the device could have been a stand-alone device that was much more like a laptop.

Where is the Photoshop lite, iMovie lite, and Garageband lite type programs that would really make the iPad a game changer? If an old G4 iMac could operate programs like that, why can’t the iPad do it with a faster processor and more memory? Where is the web/video camera?

Apple has always been so good with creating productivity devices, and that is why the iPad is so disappointing. My Macbook Pro has provided me the tools to unlock my creativity in video, photography, and music. I expected the iPad to provide a fraction of these functions. The iPad falls far short. I guess they just wanted to give us an entertainment device. That is fine, but I’m not in the market for one.

I want to highlight more to the solution from a reader of this blog:

"Anonymous said... Thanks for the help. My HD2000a had the garble problem and I took your advice, when to Radio Shack and bought the mono to mono adapter. But to my surprise it still did not work. I found I had to make two changes to the Sanyo menus to fix it. First, I had to set the external mike volume to level 2. I had it set to 5. This helped but did not solve it. I then when to the menu that deals with noise reduction(NR). I had to turn all NR OFF. Then everything worked just great. Thanks again."

When I first found the solution, I did not have the noise reduction on, and the mono to mono plug worked fine. When the Noise Reduction is turned off, it worked fine.

I also want to clarify that the problem is solved IN the camera, not in post production. When you playback the video in the camera, it sounds fine.

I'd like to make another important point about the adapter...The adapter that is pictured from Radio Shack is the one you should pick up. I had previously bought the same type of adapter from another store that was all metal. This adapter did not work very well. The design of the all metal adapter did not allow it it be plugged all the way into the camera. The tapered design of the Radio Shack adapter allows it to be plugged in all the way.

What? You've been having audio problems with your Sanyo Xacti HD 1000, 1010, and 2000? Well so was I. I contacted Sanyo's customer support line. The woman on the line was what some would refer to as a "bitch". She had probably been there two days, and didn't know what the heck I was talking about. She was no help, and was pissed that I had the Sanyo HD200o which is not available in the US at this time. She claimed that the HD 1010 and the HD 2000 were so different that audio problems with one would not work for the other. Well, she was wrong. Without help from Sanyo, I figured it out myself. So, to Sanyo's US support crew, "Bite my butt."

Here is what my audio sounded like with a Mono Mic through the 3.5mm-2.5mm stereo adapter:

Wow, that sounds horrible doesn't it. So, what is the problem? Most consumer cameras with a mic input have 3.5mm (mini plug) input. Well, the Sanyo Xacti has a 2.5mm input.

The adapter that comes with is only stereo. The Sanyo seems to use joint stereo encoding, thus giving you a distorted garbled sound. So, what is the solution?

This 3.5 mono to 2.5 mono adapter.

This little jewel from Radio Shack allowed my mono Mics to work, and stopped me from sending this great HD camcorder back.

I bet tons of folks have had this problem when using a mon0 mic. I was using an Azden WMS-Pro Wireless mic. I used it wireless as well as just plugging it into the camera. It sounded fine after I converted the sound to mono while editing. Hope this helps.

Have I hooked you in? Well you should be. I was too intrigued after reading that title I just had to watch. What I saw was pure enjoyment. I think this is the best re-creation of a scene I have seen yet.

The film was done in what looks like a series based on the Ford Fiesta. The blog where I found this gem, Laughtech Industries, is full of funny clips where the successor to the Ford Escort is worked in somehow. There are a couple more sites where you can find more of their videos. I really, really hope they do another Lebowski scene. Tossing the ringer perhaps? What about The Dude after his doctor visit?
